The Northern Office — Canada, est. 2024

About The Northern Office

The Northern Office is a small studio that builds tools for Canadians whose lives cross a border. The serious half is cross-border tax and residency tools: a day counter, a re-entry planner, provincial health rules. The other half is Being Canadian, a satirical daily app for Canadians living in the US and Canadians who like to laugh at Canadians.

We run an outpost in Las Vegas, the most Canadian city in Nevada, and we file everything from there. The tools are research, not legal or tax advice. Talk to a cross-border accountant before you act on anything you read here.

The Loonie Briefing, our free daily dispatch, is where it all started. The app and the tools grew out of it.

The team

The Northern Office is a small operation with a large cast. Some of them are real.

🏍️

Agent Zed

Special Liaison, Southern Operations

Agent Zed rode up from somewhere south of the 49th and never fully explained why. Six feet of leather and opinions, he has spent the last twenty years judging baby pageants, a fact he volunteers more often than you would expect. He handles our American operations, our intimidation needs, and the office chili cook-off, which he has never lost. Gruff. Tough. Surprisingly good with a glue gun.

🍻

Two-Four Timmy

Field Correspondent, The Canadian Outpost

Two-Four Timmy files dispatches from the field, wherever the field happens to have cell service and a Tim Hortons. Named for the case of twenty-four he considers standard travel kit, Timmy covers the stories the big desks miss: the closing of a beloved arena snack bar, the great butter-tart schism of his hometown, a moose with strong opinions about a roundabout. If it is happening at the edge of the map, Timmy is already there, slightly cold.

🦸

Canada Man

Founder

Canada Man is a dual citizen who got tired of guessing at cross-border tax rules and built the thing he wished existed. By day, mild-mannered founder of The Northern Office. The cape is mostly for morale. He answers to Alex, holds two passports and one complicated relationship with the word home, and started this so the next snowbird would not have to figure it out alone.
